You do not need to memorize 100 lab values for the NCLEX. You need about 20, and you need to know them cold: what the normal adult range is, which direction of change is dangerous, and what the nurse does first when a value is critical. The lab values that actually get tested
NCLEX questions rarely ask you to recite a range. They give you a value inside a patient scenario and expect you to recognize normal, abnormal, or critical in about two seconds, then act on it. That is why rote flashcards are not enough — but it all starts with knowing these standard adult reference ranges. Note that labs vary slightly between facilities and textbooks; these are the widely taught NCLEX-style ranges.

Coagulation labs and therapeutic drug levels are the second group the exam loves, because they connect directly to nursing actions: hold the dose, apply bleeding precautions, or call the provider.

Easy ways to memorize lab values
The easiest way to memorize lab values is to stop memorizing them one at a time and start pairing them. Several NCLEX ranges are literally the same numbers wearing different units, and a few simple patterns cover most of the table.
- Twin ranges: creatinine 0.6–1.2 and lithium 0.6–1.2 are identical numbers. So are BUN 10–20 and phenytoin 10–20. Learn one, get the other free.
- Mirror trick for ABGs: pH 7.35–7.45 and PaCO2 35–45 share the same digits — 35 and 45.
- Men are +2: hemoglobin is 12–16 for women and 14–18 for men. Just add 2.
- Rule of 3: hematocrit is roughly 3 times the hemoglobin (Hgb 14 → Hct ~42).
- Potassium is a banana: 3.5–5.0 — narrow range, big consequences. If you only drill one electrolyte, drill this one.
- Sodium salt shaker: picture a 145 mL salt shaker that must stay above 135 — Na+ 135–145.
- Platelet floors: under 150k think bleeding risk; under 50k think spontaneous bleeding; under 20k think critical.

NCLEX priority questions often hide the answer inside a lab value. If four patients have abnormal labs, the one with the cardiac or airway threat comes first. Three values show up again and again as the emergency: potassium, digoxin, and lithium. This is also the logic behind most priority and delegation questions — the deadliest value wins.
- Potassium above 5.0 or below 3.5: both directions cause lethal dysrhythmias. Hyperkalemia (peaked T waves) is the classic "see this patient first" answer. Never push IV potassium.
- Digoxin above 2.0: toxicity risk climbs, and hypokalemia makes digoxin toxicity worse — a favorite two-step NCLEX trap. Check the apical pulse for a full minute; hold if under 60.
- Lithium above 1.2: toxic range starts almost immediately above therapeutic. Dehydration and low sodium raise lithium levels, so a vomiting patient on lithium is a red flag.
- Also treat as urgent: glucose under 70 (treat now), platelets under 20k, INR well above 3 with bleeding, and any critical sodium change causing neuro symptoms.
ABG values and the ROME trick
Arterial blood gases are really three numbers and one method. Memorize the ranges below, then use ROME — Respiratory Opposite, Metabolic Equal. If pH and PaCO2 move in opposite directions, the problem is respiratory. If pH and HCO3 move in the same direction, it is metabolic.

How lab values show up on NGN case studies
Since the Next Generation NCLEX launched in April 2023, lab values rarely appear as simple one-liners. You might be asked to highlight the findings that require follow-up, then choose the condition, then pick interventions. Yes, slightly. For example, some sources list fasting glucose as 70–100 instead of 70–110, or creatinine up to 1.3. The differences are small and the NCLEX writes questions with clearly normal or clearly abnormal values, so borderline numbers will not decide your answer. Why are potassium and digoxin often tested together?
Because hypokalemia increases the risk of digoxin toxicity, so a patient can be in danger even when the digoxin level looks therapeutic.
